What is an adverb of time?

An adverb of time tells us when, for how long, or sometimes how often an action happens.

የጊዜ ተውሳከ ግስ አንድ ድርጊት መቼ፣ ለምን ያህል ጊዜ ወይም ምን ያህል ጊዜ ደጋግሞ እንደሚፈጸም ይገልጻል።

Past / ያለፈ

yesterday, last night, earlier, ago, recently

We met yesterday.

Present / አሁን

now, today, tonight, still, already

I am studying now.

Future / ወደፊት

tomorrow, soon, later, next week

I will call you later.

Where does the time expression go?

Most common

At the end:
I visited my aunt yesterday.

ብዙ ጊዜ የጊዜ ቃሉ በአረፍተ ነገሩ መጨረሻ ይመጣል።

For emphasis

At the beginning:
Yesterday, I visited my aunt.

ጊዜውን ለማጉላት በመጀመሪያ ሊመጣ ይችላል።

Common corrections / የተለመዱ ማስተካከያዎች

❌ yesterday night → ✅ last night
❌ ago two days → ✅ two days ago
❌ I will tomorrow go → ✅ I will go tomorrow.
❌ I didn't finish already → ✅ I haven't finished yet.

A busy Saturday in Addis Ababa

Yesterday, Hana woke up early because she wanted to finish several jobs. First, she went to the local shop. She bought bread, milk and coffee. She normally shops in the afternoon, but she went in the morning this time.

Afterwards, Hana visited her sister. They prepared coffee together and talked for nearly two hours. Her sister had already made lunch, so they ate soon after Hana arrived. Hana was still there when a friend phoned her.

Hana returned home in the evening. She has not finished all her jobs yet, but she will do the rest tomorrow. Tonight, she is going to rest and watch a film.
